Blue collar jobs in India: demand, pay and the online degree route to supervisor roles

Blue collar jobs are not shrinking in India. Indeed estimates the country will need about 2.43 million blue collar workers by 2027 (Indeed India, via BW Marketing World), and Deloitte found that hiring intent for these roles rose 10% in 2025 (Deloitte India). Most of that demand is for entry-level and skilled-trade positions, and only a small share of them pay well.

This guide covers who is hiring, what the roles pay, where the gap sits between a worker and a supervisor, and which UGC-entitled online degrees connect to that move. Every figure below is linked to its source, and the full list is at the end.

What counts as a blue collar job

Blue collar jobs are occupations built on manual labour or skilled trades (Outlook Business, quoting Indeed). Deloitte’s 2025 workforce report covers manufacturing, automotive, e-commerce and logistics. TeamLease’s salary report names mechanics, material handlers, machine operators and electricians. Delivery staff, warehouse workers and retail floor staff sit in the same group in Indeed’s survey.

How big is the demand

Indeed’s projection is 2.43 million blue collar workers across industries, and quick commerce alone is expected to add about half a million of those jobs . Indeed’s India sales head said quick commerce companies hired over 40,000 people in a single quarter to handle festive-season orders (Outlook Business).

The same Indeed survey found that close to half of the employers across 14 sectors plan to keep hiring blue collar workers. Deloitte puts India’s blue collar workforce at roughly 300 million people (Deloitte India).

What blue collar jobs pay

The table collects the main pay and demand figures from the reports we reviewed.

Read together, the numbers show two things. Raises are real, and mechanics and material handlers are seeing double-digit hikes. But the base is low, and Deloitte says the few roles above ₹60,000 a month usually go to highly experienced or specialised workers. Wage growth alone does not move a worker out of the lower pay band.

The skills and perception gap

A Foundamental analysis says employers in blue collar-heavy sectors hire around 500,000 workers a month and still meet only about 80% of their needs (Foundamental). It attributes the shortfall to a workforce that is largely unskilled or under-skilled. It also reports that many young people prefer white collar jobs because blue collar work carries a low-status image.

The government has noticed the same pattern. The Economic Survey 2025-26, presented in January 2026, asked whether ITI diplomas could be upgraded into bachelor degrees. Its argument was that degree-equivalent recognition could raise the standing of vocational tracks in a country where families often link degrees with status (Careers360 News). That is a proposal, not a policy, but it shows where the debate is heading.

What the career ladder looks like

The Tamil Nadu Department of Employment and Training publishes career maps for ITI trades. For a fitter, the path runs from technician or machine operator, to supervisor, to shop in-charge or entrepreneur. For a carpenter, it runs from labourer or helper, to supervisor or senior worker, to work manager, production manager or self-employed.

Careers360 describes a similar route for ITI holders who join a polytechnic diploma through lateral entry, which lets them skip the first year and aim for roles such as junior engineer, technician or supervisor .

Every one of these maps has a supervisor step. They list apprenticeships and polytechnic diplomas as the upskilling options. An online degree is not on those lists. It is a separate option that targets the management side of the same ladder: planning, inventory, procurement and team handling.

Online degrees that connect to blue collar careers

The closest match is a BBA with a logistics, supply chain or operations focus, because warehouses, delivery networks and factories employ a large share of blue collar workers. The programmes below describe themselves as UGC-entitled or UGC-approved. Confirm the status of the specific programme and year on the UGC Distance Education Bureau portal before you apply.

ProgrammeWhat it coversSource

Online BBA, Logistics & Supply Chain Management, UPES OnlineEssentials of logistics and supply chain, international logistics, and lean supply chain management. UPES Online

Here is how the match works in practice. Someone who has spent years in a warehouse already knows the floor side of inventory. These degrees teach the planning side, which is what the listed roles involve. A worker from a manufacturing plant would look at the operations and quality management programmes first.

After a bachelor’s degree, an MBA with an operations or supply chain specialisation is the next step some graduates consider. We have not covered MBA programmes in the research behind this article, so compare them separately.

Studying while you work

Online Manipal says its format lets learners build operations and supply chain expertise without disrupting existing commitments. Dr DY Patil University, Navi Mumbai states that all exams for its online BBA in Logistics and Supply Chain Management are held online.

Shift workers should ask two practical questions before enrolling: whether live classes are recorded, and how flexible the exam dates are. Both vary by university, and neither shows up in a brochure headline.

When a degree is the wrong move

A bachelor’s programme takes three years, based on the programmes listed above. If you need a better job within a few weeks, a trade certificate or an apprenticeship is faster. The Tamil Nadu career maps list the apprenticeship (NAC certificate) as a standard upskilling step.

If you want to stay on the technical side as an electrician or mechanic, a polytechnic diploma through lateral entry may fit better than a business degree. And we could not find published data on salary gains for blue collar workers who complete an online BBA, so treat any counsellor or advertisement that promises a specific figure with caution.

How to choose a programme

  • Check the programme’s UGC recognition for the current year on the UGC Distance Education Bureau portal.
  • Match the specialisation to your sector: logistics for warehouse and delivery work, operations and quality for manufacturing.
  • Confirm eligibility in writing. Most undergraduate programmes ask for 12th pass, so ITI holders with only a 10th-pass certificate should ask the university what route it accepts, such as completing 12th through NIOS.
  • Ask for the total fee across all six semesters, not just the first instalment.
  • Check the exam mode, the live-class timings and whether recordings are available.

Frequently asked questions

Are blue collar jobs in demand in India?

Yes. Indeed projects a need for 2.43 million workers by 2027, and Deloitte reports a 10% rise in hiring intent for 2025. Sources are linked in the sections above.

Which blue collar jobs have the fastest pay growth?

TeamLease’s FY26 projections put mechanics at 10.4%, material handlers at 10%, machine operators at 9.9% and electricians at 9.3%. These are projected hikes, not guaranteed pay.

Do I need a degree for blue collar jobs?

Not for most entry roles. The state career maps cited above show ITI certificates and apprenticeships as the usual entry route. A degree becomes relevant if you want a supervisory or planning role in logistics or operations.

Can an ITI holder do an online degree?

It depends on the university and on whether you have completed 12th. Ask the university in writing which qualification it accepts for the BBA.

Which online degree suits warehouse and delivery workers?

A BBA in Logistics and Supply Chain Management is the closest fit. GLA Online, Chandigarh University, Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Online Manipal and UPES Online all list such a programme.

Is an online degree valid for jobs?

The programmes above describe themselves as UGC-entitled or UGC-approved. Verify the recognition of the exact programme on the UGC Distance Education Bureau portal before paying any fee.

Compare programmes with a counsellor

If you are a technician, warehouse worker or machine operator thinking about the supervisor step, talk to an EduCollege counsellor. We compare the fees, eligibility and specialisations of UGC-entitled online BBA programmes side by side, so you can see which one fits your sector before you apply.
