26 October 2026

NTA opened JEE Main 2027 registration on 24 October 2026. Session 1 applications close at 11:50 pm on 22 November 2026, and the January exam runs on 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 January 2027. Session 2 follows in April, with applications from 5 January to 3 February 2027. Reports say the syllabus is unchanged from 2026, so your preparation plan stays the same.
JEE Main is the national entrance test for BE/BTech (Paper 1) and for B.Arch and B.Planning (Papers 2A and 2B). The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts it. Paper 1 also decides who can sit JEE Advanced, the entrance test for the IITs. Its results are used for admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutions, and to institutes funded or recognised by participating states.

Who can apply for JEE Main 2027?
- Age: there is no age limit for the exam. The institute you want to join may set its own age rule.
- Class 12 year: you can apply if you passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2025 or 2026, or if you are appearing in 2027. If you passed in 2024 or earlier, you cannot. The passing year is the year you first passed, so a later improvement attempt does not reset it.
- Qualifying exams: Class 12 from a recognised central or state board, an intermediate or pre-university exam, NIOS senior secondary with at least five subjects, a three-year diploma recognised by AICTE or a state technical board, and some international qualifications such as A levels or the IB diploma.
- State of eligibility: this is the state where you passed Class 12, not where you live or were born. A student who studied in Delhi but lives in Noida has Delhi as the state of eligibility.
- Reservations: EWS 10%, OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15% and ST 7.5% of seats in every programme, plus 5% for persons with benchmark disability within each category.
NTA only conducts the exam. Each institute sets its own admission eligibility, so check JoSAA, CSAB and your target college before you assume you qualify.
How do you register, and how much does it cost?
- Register. Go to jeemain.nta.nic.in and register through MeriPehchaan, the government’s single sign-on. You get an application number, and the same number works for both sessions. Create a password of 8 to 13 characters with an upper-case letter, a lower-case letter, a number and a special character.
- Fill in the form. Enter your personal details, the paper you want, your qualification and your exam cities. You can choose up to four cities, limited to your state of permanent or present address. Your name on the scorecard will follow your Class 10 certificate, so enter it the same way.
- Upload your documents. You need a live photo (taken with a webcam, or by scanning a QR code on your phone), a photo of 10 to 200 KB in JPG, a signature of 10 to 100 KB in JPG, and your Class 10 certificate or marksheet as a PDF of 50 to 300 KB. Add the disability or UDID certificate if it applies to you.
- Pay online. Use net banking, a card or UPI. Processing charges and GST are extra.
- Download the confirmation page. It appears only after payment succeeds. Save it.
Use your own mobile number and email address, because NTA sends updates only to those. One number and email can be used for one form. Submitting more than one application is not allowed, and appearing under two application numbers is treated as unfair means.
Fees below are per session, for centres in India:
| Category | Paper 1 or Paper 2A or Paper 2B | Two papers |
|---|---|---|
| General, male | ₹1,000 | ₹2,000 |
| General, female | ₹800 | ₹1,600 |
| Gen-EWS or OBC-NCL, male | ₹900 | ₹2,000 |
| Gen-EWS or OBC-NCL, female | ₹800 | ₹1,600 |
| SC, ST, PwD, third gender | ₹500 | ₹1,000 |
Centres outside India charge more. Late applicants pay ₹500 on top, and the fee is not refunded once paid.
What is the JEE Main 2027 exam pattern?
All of Paper 1 is a computer-based test.
| Subject | Section A (MCQs) | Section B (numerical) | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 20 | 5 | 100 |
| Physics | 20 | 5 | 100 |
| Chemistry | 20 | 5 | 100 |
| Total | 60 | 15 | 300 |
- Marking: +4 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong one, 0 for a question you skip or only mark for review. The negative mark applies to numerical questions too.
- Numerical answers: you type an integer using an on-screen keypad. Round off to the nearest integer.
- Duration: 3 hours. First shift 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, second shift 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
- Language: 13 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. You get the paper in English and your chosen language, and the English version prevails if the two differ. You cannot change your language after the correction window closes.
- Dropped or wrong questions: if a question is dropped or found wrong, all candidates in that shift get full marks for it.
Paper 2A (B.Arch) has Mathematics (25 questions, 100 marks), an aptitude test (50 questions, 200 marks) and a drawing test (2 questions, 100 marks), 400 marks in all. The drawing test is on paper, on an A4 sheet.
Paper 2B (B.Planning) has Mathematics (25 questions, 100 marks), aptitude (50 questions, 200 marks) and planning-based questions (25 questions, 100 marks), 400 marks in all.
Each of these papers takes 3 hours, or 3 hours 30 minutes if you take both 2A and 2B.
What is in the JEE Main 2027 syllabus?
Reports say NTA has kept the syllabus unchanged from 2026. Paper 1 covers 54 units: 14 in Mathematics and 20 each in Physics and Chemistry. The topics come from Class 11 and 12. The units below follow the structure NTA has used since 2025. Check them against the syllabus PDF on jeemain.nta.nic.in before you plan your schedule.

Each subject carries equal weight, 100 marks out of 300.
How do two sessions, NTA scores and ranks work?
You can sit one session or both. If you appear in both, NTA takes the better of your two total NTA scores. It does not combine your best subject scores from each session.
Because Paper 1 runs in many shifts, NTA converts raw marks into NTA scores using a percentile-based method, so students in easier and harder shifts are compared fairly. The common rank list is declared after Session 2.
If two candidates have the same total NTA score, the tie is broken by NTA score in Mathematics first, then Physics, then Chemistry. Maths therefore decides a tie before the other two subjects do.
- JEE Advanced: the top 2,50,000 candidates, all categories together, in Paper 1 of JEE Main 2027 are eligible to appear, subject to JEE Advanced’s own conditions. Check jeeadv.ac.in.
- Seat allocation: JoSAA and CSAB use the common rank list. NTA does not handle admissions.
- Answer key challenge: NTA shows a provisional key for about two to three days. Each challenge costs ₹200 per question, and the fee is not refunded.
- Response sheet: your recorded responses are also visible for about two to three days. Download yours, because NTA will not provide it later.
- No re-check or re-test: there is no re-evaluation of results, and NTA does not hold a re-test if you miss the exam.
What do you need on exam day?
Carry these, or you will not be allowed in:
- A clear A4 printout of your admit card with the self-declaration filled in
- Two extra passport-size photos, the same as the one you uploaded
- One original, valid photo ID, such as a school ID card, PAN card, driving licence, voter ID, passport, Aadhaar with photo, Class 12 board admit card with photo, ration card with photo, or bank passbook with photo
Timings for the first shift are below. The second shift runs six hours later.
- 7:00 am to 8:30 am: entry, frisking and document checks
- 8:30 am to 8:50 am: instructions
- 8:50 am: log in to read instructions
- 9:00 am: test starts
NTA advises reaching two hours early. Gates close 30 minutes before the exam, and latecomers are not admitted.
Phones, smartwatches, calculators, geometry or pencil boxes, bags, paper and food are not allowed. Diabetic candidates may carry sugar tablets or whole fruit. A transparent water bottle is allowed. NTA gives you a ballpoint pen and rough sheets, which you hand back after the test, so write your name and roll number on each sheet. B.Arch candidates bring their own geometry set, pencils, erasers and colour pencils or crayons for the drawing test. Watercolours are not allowed.
Unfair means can lead to cancelled results and a ban of up to three years. The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024 also carries imprisonment of five to ten years and a fine of up to ₹50 lakh for offences under it.
If engineering is only one of your options, remember that online BBA and BCA programmes generally ask for a Class 12 pass, not a JEE score. EduCollege counsellors can walk you through eligibility and universities, free of charge.
