A DEB-ID is a unique ID created for learners seeking admission to Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or Online programs. UGC-DEB states that a valid DEB-ID is mandatory for students taking admission in these programs, and it's created using an ABC-ID. Set both up before admission day — don't wait until the last minute.
For the August 2026 session, the UGC-DEB portal currently lists 15 September 2026 as the last date for learner admission. Dates can change, so confirm on the official portal before applying.
Which Programs Are Not Allowed in Online Mode?
Not every degree can be offered through online education. UGC-DEB maintains a list of programs prohibited in ODL and/or Online mode — current 2026 instructions cover areas such as engineering, medicine, physiotherapy, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, architecture, law, agriculture, horticulture, hotel management, catering/culinary studies, aircraft maintenance, visual arts, sports and aviation, along with other programs restricted by the relevant statutory or regulatory bodies.
M.Phil and Ph.D. programs are also prohibited through ODL and Online mode. From the August 2026 session onward, allied and healthcare programs covered under the NCAHP Act, 2021 — including Psychology as a specialisation — are not permitted through ODL/Online mode either. Regulations can change, so never assume a course is allowed just because a website lists it; check current UGC-DEB information before admission.
